The Supreme Court on August 18 stayed a 2018 notification issued by the Uttarakhand government that barred blind candidates from applying under the General Category for government jobs. Terming the notification as “absurd,” the Court observed that such a restriction is discriminatory and violates the rights of persons with disabilities. The bench emphasized that disability cannot be a ground to deny equal opportunity in public employment.
This interim relief ensures that blind candidates can apply for posts in the General Category until the matter is finally decided.
