Three nights of anti‑immigrant unrest in Ireland

Ballymena, County Antrim – Violent riots escalated this week following the court appearance of two 14‑year‑olds—using a Romanian interpreter—charged with sexually assaulting a teenager. What began as a vigil on June 9 rapidly devolved into petrol‑bomb and masonry attacks on police and migrant homes .

  • Second night (June 10–11): Hundreds of masked rioters hurled petrol bombs, bottles, bricks, and fireworks at officers. At least 17 policemen were injured. Four houses damaged; multiple arrests made.
  • Third night (June 11–12): Violence spread to Larne, Coleraine, and Portadown. A leisure centre housing migrant families in Larne was attacked, forcing evacuations. Total police injuries now near 41, with 14 arrests.
  • Tonight (June 13): Unrest continued for a fourth consecutive night in Portadown, with petrol bombs and masonry hurled at police, though fewer injuries reported. Officers from England and Wales have been deployed.

Response & reaction
Officials denounced the attacks as “racist thuggery” and hate crimes. First Minister Michelle O’Neill and PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher demanded calm. The Philippine Embassy confirmed that Filipino families were among those targeted. Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn is expected to visit Ballymena, and online incitements are under investigation.
